Actualization of ethnic identity in Buryatia in modern period (based on the materials of sociological researches)

The paper analyzes the influence of ethnic, age and territorial characteristics on the manifestation of actualized ethnic identity in the Republic of Buryatia. The article is based on the results of two sociological studies conducted in 2018–2019, devoted to the study of the state of interethnic relations and interethnic harmony in the region. It is shown that the population of Buryatia is not characterized by a high level of actualization of ethnicity – less than half of the respondents never forget about their nationality. A large degree of actualization of ethnic identity was found among Buryats and representatives of other nationalities, as well as in the age group of 18–29 years. Urban and rural populations demonstrate an equal level according to this criterion. The authors conclude that, in general, the difference in the manifestation of the actualization of ethnicity in ethnic, territorial and age groups is poorly expressed; the ethnic identity of the population of Buryatia does not conflict with other types of identities; a new generation has grown up, for whom the subjective significance of ethnic identity is high, and it has a positive character. Social, cultural, economic and political conditions in the region contribute to the preservation of interethnic harmony
