Statement of the problem. The importance and relevance of vocational guidance is confirmed by the order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia, issued in 2023 in order to assist students in professional self-determination taking into account the needs and opportunities and the socio-economic situation in the labour market. On the basis of practical experience, the authors of the article note that in modern conditions there are changes in the nature of professional self-determination (professional interests and motivations change, there are changes in value orientations). Thus, we see changes in the subject of vocational guidance. In addition, the world, including the world of professions, is becoming more uncertain and less predictable. Modern technologies and new challenges change the process of vocational counselling itself. Moreover, in a situation where the paradigm ‘one profession for life’ does not work, not only teenagers, but also adults till retirement age and beyond are turning to a career counsellor for help. The changing subject, world and process lead to the need to investigate the opportunities and threats to the professional formation, development and adaptation of the individual in socio-economic circumstances in order to overcome the present challenges. The purpose of the article is to try to take a holistic view of the problems of vocational guidance activities, professional development, adaptation to the changes in the surrounding world, taking into account the socio-psychological component. On the basis of practical experience, it is necessary to identify the key problems of professional development, as well as to analyze the scientific literature on the search of scientifically based solutions to the problems. The methodology of our theoretical research consists of the analysis, generalization and systematization of scientific research works of foreign and Russian scientists related to career guidance, professional development, adaptation to changes in the surrounding world, taking into account the socio-psychological component, and this determines the methods used: analysis, synthesis, generalization, systematization of scientific ideas and research on the problem of professional development. Research results. The study shows how the features of development of the world, modern generation and the level of development of science and technology change the nature of problems under study and affect the process of professional and personal counselling. Modern career is a non-linear process including multiple career changes and the need for adaptation. Significant factors are anxiety and sensitivity to uncertainty, which requires the integration of psychological methods in career counselling. Digitalization and artificial intelligence have an impact on changing the process of career and personal counselling, however, an individual approach to each client is needed.
