The study examines the historical causes and current trends in migration processes at both the global and national levels. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of the current migration policy of the Russian Federation, as well as the current demographic situation in the country. Conclusions are drawn that the improvement of the quality of the Russian migration policy is associated with the strengthening and improvement of its legal basis, strengthening the effectiveness and responsibility of public authorities dealing with migration issues, with the definition and observance of requirements for migrants, the creation of conditions for their adaptation to the social and radio of compatriots living abroad. It is stated that internal migration requires the creation of a civilizational framework consisting of a system of legal and public oversight, as well as conditions and opportunities to meet the needs and interests of ethnic groups outside their traditional territories of residence. A specific aspect of demographic policy in modern Russia should be the preservation and strengthening of the country’s interethnic diversity, creating conditions for the reproduction and development of all peoples living on its territory.
