В статье рассматривается политика первых президентских администраций США в отношении американских индейцев. Движущим фактором этой политики была идея просвещения аборигенов, воспитание в них качеств и навыков, необходимых для интеграции в общество белых людей. Понимая всю сложность задачи, власти США только начинали прощупывать почву для выработки последовательной стратегии ассимиляции индейцев.
