Analytical model of the near-earth magnetopause observed by Prognoz and Interball satellites

The empirical analytical model of the terrestrial magnetopause was developed based on crossings of these boundaries by Prognoz/Interball orbiters in 1972-2000. This model was used for the investigation of the magnetopause behavior in different solar wind conditions. It is revealed that the terrestrial magnetopause is compressed by about 5 % in the direction perpendicular to the plane formed by vectors of the solar wind velocity and the interplanetary magnetic field. The influence of Bz-component of the interplanetary magnetic field on the subsolar magnetopause position was not found in Prognoz/Interball data. The developed empirical magnetopause model is convenient for further analytical terrestrial bow shock modeling.
