The article examines ethnopolitical processes in the Republic of Crimea in the XXI century. A formula for calculating the index of ethnopolitical tension of municipalities of the Crimean Peninsula has been developed by using three indicators: the degree of transformation of the ethnic structure, the level of ethno-cultural distance, the degree of ethnic heterogeneity. As a result of the calculations, the municipalities of the Crimea were divided into six groups, depending on the potential of ethnopolitical tension: municipalities with maximum, high, medium, decreased, low and minimum levels of ethnopolitical tension. It is concluded, that the majority of municipalities with maximal and high level of ethnopolitical tension are located mainly in the central part of the Crimean Peninsula. In turn, the majority of municipalities in the south of Crimea (62 %) have minimal, decreased and low potential for ethnopolitical tension. The municipalities in the northern part of the region mostly belong to the category of territories with an average level of ethno-political tension or with low and minimal potential for it. The exception is the Dzhankoy district, which has a high level of this indicator.
