Anemia is a particularly significant problem in patients with diabetic nephropathy, since in the case of kidney damage of a different nature (for example, in patients with chronic glomerulonephritis), with comparable indicators of blood creatinine and daily loss of protein in the urine, a decrease in hemoglobin level is observed much less frequently. Probably, this is largely due to the peculiarities of morphological and pathophysiological changes in the kidneys in diabetic nephropathy, including the often detected tubulointerstitial lesion leading to an early impairment of erythropoietin (EPO) secretion.
