The article is devoted to the study of English borrowings presented in the sports newspaper discourse. The content of the concepts “sports discourse” and “anglicism” is revealed, and an analysis researchers’ views on this issue is given. The analysis of the selected lexical material made it possible to rank 5 most popular kinds of sport in terms of the frequency of using English borrowings in them, namely: motor sports, hockey, football, boxing, tennis. The authors come to the conclusion that anglicisms in sports discourse are widely represented, which is due to the growing role of sport in the world community, the desire of journalists to show their awareness of the emergence of new trends in the development of sport and to give prestige to their speech. In addition, there is a gender distinction: anglicisms are more common for men’s speech, while the percentage of usage of English borrowings by women is much lower.
