The article considers some methods of nomination of concepts in the history of Russian linguistic borrowings. The article confirms opinions expressed by different scientists about the significant role of metonymy as a means of nomination, especially in the "pre-metaphorical" period. Most probably, the typicalized formulas of metonimization are linguistic universals and are valid for all languages. Therefore, many borrowed words have passed through the processes of metonimization in the period of their existence in the source-language. There is a huge number of such lexemes, however this article describes examples of only such foreign lexemes in the Russian language, the etymological history of which had the metonymic model with the original element - a proper name, in particular the anthroponym - the name of a person. In this case, there is a lack of artistic expression (which should be characteristic of a trope) in a new word-metonym; it acts as a label of the new notion: anthroponym - name of a monetary unit (abaz, Louis), anthroponym - name of the invented object (Breguet, smaster), anthroponym - name of the clothing item (Bolivar, cardigan) etc. Thus, we may come to the definite conclusion that in the history of borrowed foreign words the process of metonymization based on the proper name-anthroponym was a productive way of semantic derivation.
