Apollon Mokritsky was studied under Alexey Venetsianov and later with Karl Briullov. To the question about the evolution of the view on the artistic method

The article focuses on the artist, teacher and outstanding representative of artistic milieu of 1830 - 1860th - Apollon Nikolaevich Mokritsky. The author notes that the significance of Mokritsky for Russian art culture is determined not so much by his art works as by his epistolary heritage. That’s it allows us to consider the figure of Apollon Mokritsky from the one hand as a student of A. Venetsianov and from the other hand as a follower of K. Briullov. Particular attention is paid to the Mokritsky’s views, which define the essence of the artistic method of each of his mentors. Mokritsky’s judgments as a direct representative and observer of the artistic situation of the second third of the nineteenth century and the position of scientists of the twentieth century with respect to him were analyzed.
