The archaeological map of Russia. Nizhny Novgorod region: methodology of preparation, composition and scientific potential

The Archaeological Map of the Nizhny Novgorod Region is a four-volumebook which includes information on 2555 sites discovered in the period from the mid-19th century, when archaeological excavations were launched in the Nizhny NovgorodRegion, to 2012, inclusive. The aim of the paper is to maintain links and ensure continuitybetween the Archaeological Map of the Nizhny Novgorod Region and its plannednew version. The paper characterizes sources of information on archaeological sites,and substantiates the composition ofthe edition. As a corpus ofhistorical sources representedby various archaeological sites of almost all historical periods, the Archaeological Mapof Nizhny Novgorod possesses a substantial scientific potential for studying ancient historyof the region set in broad perspectives and different contexts. An example of this approachto the material contained in the Archaeological Map is a historical and archaeologicalessay describing the status of archaeology in the Nizhny Novgorod Region in currentstage of its development included in the fourth volume of the book.
