The article deals with the experience of the Soviet state in building a model of ethnic groups' interaction in the Arctic regions of Yakutia in the 1980-s. The paper also considers the transformation of the Soviet model as a result of the changes in the ethnic groups' coexistence during the crisis 1990-s. Based on the data of the field researches and archival sources the author identifies the platforms of ethnic groups' interaction in the Arctic regions of Yakutia at the turning-point of the Russian history. The author traces the changes in the society that determined the isolated ethnic coexistence in the 1990-s and the formation of the "Northern" territorial identity. The "Northern" identity is considered as a uniting basis for the multi-ethnic population of the Arctic.
