The article explores the position of army in the first civil war in Rome, when it started to play much more important role in the Roman politics. So-called client armies became the backbone of many military leaders: it was them who demonstrated the greatest combat power and stability. Though it must be noted that the new recruits showed unprecedented willfulness. However the transformation of the Roman army into an independent political power was yet to come.
