The article focuses on the explication of the screenology discourse as part of media studies and the historical and cultural study of individual technical artifacts-phenomena that constitute the genealogy and genesis of the non-electronic screeniness. The relevance of the work is due to the dynamics of scaling and the importance of various types of screen phenomena in the modern socio-cultural space. The initial stage of the cultural constitution of screeniness is examined. Methodologically, the study is based on historical reconstruction and analysis of techno-artefacts as part of the functional methodology of E. Huhtamo’s screenology, as well as on the method of comparative cultural analysis and the systematic approach. The work examines a number of devices essential to the history of non-electronic screeniness. The peculiarities of the work of the first of them are highlighted, and attention is focused on the innovativeness of these samples. The conclusion is made about the cultural and, partly, at the level of general concepts, the technological connection between the non-electronic and electronic stages of screeniness development.
