The syndrome of the arteria mesenterica superior is characterized by a clinical picture of obstruction of the lower horizontal part of the duodenum as a result of it’s compression between the aorta and the arteria mesenterica superior at the level of the third lumbar vertebra. This syndrome has many names. Of these, the most common: arteria mesenterica superior syndrome, vascular compression of the duodenum, arteriomesentral compression of the duodenum, duodenal compression resulting arteriomesentral relations duodenostasis, duodenal obstruction, chronic vascular compression of the duodenum, Wilkie Syndrome.
