The Great Patriotic War became a technological watershed in the development of the Soviet defence complex. New technical solutions in the aircraft industry and radar used both by the enemy, Nazi Germany, and the allies, the United States and Great Britain, have become a challenge for domestic industry institutes and design bureaus. Analysis of archival documents suggests that the Soviet Union effectively used the potential of research institutes to introduce Western technologies. Materials on advanced developments, including jet engines, aircraft armour, and radar systems, were received as war trophies or as reparations payments from Germany, as well as from Lend-Lease allies. The result of the successful work of the Soviet research institutes was to ensure the technological sovereignty of the USSR in the production of advanced weapons systems.
