Automobilization as a generator of social risks

Бесплатный доступ

The article presents a range of problems caused by mass motorization in cities. The automobile is viewed not only as a means of mobility but also as a factor leading to the fragmentation of urban space, environmental risks, and social exclusion. The focus is on the high accident rate, the key threat of which is primarily caused by human factors: drunk driving, speeding, and aggressive behavior. A comparison with successful experiences in other countries suggests the need for a systems approach to addressing these issues. The solution requires addressing three elements simultaneously: human behavior (education and tightening sanctions), the technical safety of transport and infrastructure, and the humanization of the urban environment. Reducing the risks of motorization is a sociotechnical challenge that requires a paradigm shift toward a culture of safety, mutual respect on the road, and prioritizing quality of life.
