The article studies the problem of the author's interpretation of a literary work in cinema. The film directed by A. Herman "It's Hard to be God", based on the novel of the same name by A. and B. Strugatsky, was taken as material for analysis. In the course of the study, the authors revealed that the difficulty of interpreting the author's idea is primarily due to the imagery of the expression of thought, which determines the presence of different understandings. The emphasis in the article was placed on a creative and imaginative interpretation, which is understood as a "translation" of a literary work into the languages of other types of arts, in particular cinema. Two levels of director's interpretation were determined. At the second level, the key role in interpretation is played by the personality of the director, the possibilities of the film language and the author's style of its use. In the course of a comparative analysis of the features of the author's "reading" of the space and the image of the main character in the film by A. Herman and the story by A. and B. It was established by the Strugatskys that the film initially went far beyond a simple film adaptation, becoming an independent work surpassing the literary original in artistic resonance.
