The article puts forward a hypothesis about the influence exerted by the book of Archimandrite Theodore (A.M. Bukharev) “Job the Long-Suffering” is aimed at the formation of a number of episodes of Dostoevsky’s novel “The Brothers Karamazov”, in particular, the famous dialogue between Ivan and Alyosha Karamazov about the nature and essence of world evil, the measure of responsibility for it of people and the Lord God, and a related story about a boy hunted by hunting dogs. Judging by the available data, Dostoevsky got acquainted with Bukharev’s book about Job in the 1870s. Earlier, in the May issue of his magazine “Vremja” (1861), he published A.A. Grigoriev’s article “Opposition to stagnation. Features from the history of obscurantism” as act of defense Archimandrite Theodore from the cruel persecution to which the priest was subjecting the idea of the essential need for the real construction of Christian culture in the country, the convergence of the meaning of the gospel commandments and the reality of public life as the only way to defeat evil in conditions when many Christians tend to pagan or Pharisaic model of their religiosity. The article suggests that the specific interpretation of the theodicy of the biblical Job, which we see in Bukharev’s book, had a significant impact on the formulation of the protest of Ivan Karamazov, who refuses the very possibility of paradise in conditions when cruelty and violence in the world are still ongoing. A number of Ivan’s arguments, according to our opinion, are a paraphrase of Job’s remarks in his conversations with friends and A.M. Bukharev’s comments on the Bible book.
