The article presents the Holy Trinity theological doctrine of Professor Archpriest Dumitru Staniloae, an outstanding theologian of the 20th century. It has not been thoroughly studied in Russia because of the lack of translations from Romanian into Russian. His original text Teologia Dogmatica Ortodoxa in Romanian and its English version are used as a source. An attempt is made to assess Prof. Dumitru’s Trinitarian doctrine in the perspective of the modern Russian theological scholarship. In particular, one of his basic teachings about the Holy Spirit proceeding from the Son is criticized. St. Augustin’s influence and the psychological language should be mentioned as connected with Prof. Staniloae’s description of communion of the Divine Persons, which is quite common in Latin tradition. On the whole, however, the Trinitarian doctrine of Prof. D. Staniloae is certainly of great interest, contributes a lot to the development of modern Orthodox dogmatic thought and requires further study.
