More than a century ago Buddhism came to America. Immigrants from China and Japan began arriving in California and Hawaii in the mid-1800s mainly as workers at farms and plantations. The Buddhist immigration is a continuous process; new immigrants come and gradually merge in the context of existing ethnic communities and sociocultural realities of the USA.
