The article deals with the history of Mahayana Buddhism (Tibetan version) in Russia, as well as with the place and role of Buddhism in social and cultural traditions of Buryats, Kalmyks and Tuvans. We reveal the reasons and prerequisites for successful spread of Buddhism among the peoples of Buryatia, Kalmykia and Tuva, social and political traditions established in Mongolia, which have been brought in these republics. Based on opinion polls and observations the current state and the main features of Buddhist culture in three republics are analyzed. We conclude that Buddhist doctrine and culture have a significant influence on cultural, social and spiritual life of Buryats, Kalmyks and Tuvans.
