Until the present discovery, ground burial sites were unknown in the tundra zone of the Far North of Western Siberia, and the finds of burials were represented only by single graves. During the field survey on the territory in the southern part of the Yamal Peninsula in 2012, first Medieval burial complex was discovered. Its partial stationary archaeological study was conducted in the summer of 2016. The results of the study revealed the presence of the autochthonous population of the Peninsula in the Middle Ages. This population practiced the funerary ritual typical of the population of the taiga zone of Siberia, which was different from the ritual of the modern tundra Nenets using “halmer” burials on the ground.
