The goals of criminal punishment and its types in the context of their correlation

The article analyzes the issues of the correlation of goals and types of criminal penalties on some examples against the background of high-profile crimes, recently covered in the mass media. Achieving the goals of criminal punishment is impossible without a differentiated and individualized approach to the personality of the criminal, determining the degree of his criminal “defeat”, taking into account psychological and pedagogical characteristics. To increase the role of punishment as a means of countering criminal manifestations, a system of criteria is needed that provides a real prospect of applying various amounts of legal restrictions to convicts, depending not only on the severity of the crime committed, but also on the identity of the perpetrator. The novelty of the work is conditioned by new approaches to determining the goals of criminal punishment, as well as the author's proposals for changing and supplementing the norms of criminal legislation.
