The term “tradition” in the language of modern humanities needs to be clarified. This is due to the fact that tradition is often understood as a synonym for the familiar with positive connotations, and no less often the traditional is mixed with the archaic or associated with the mode of village culture. The article suggests and reasons a value- based approach to the study of discourses of tradition, which promotes terminological clarity. Hermeneutical values that are related to interpretation of social and natural phenomena and processes as well as to reflection of this understanding in the symbolic discourse being constructed are proposed as components of the value model of the tradition. The study also examines pragmatic values of tradition, which go back to the archaic ideas that a ritual can directly influence the reality and features of socialization, which imply that a person acquires the norms and rules developed by the society, the ability to apply them and navigate in the social space. As a result, the value content of spiritual experience appears as entirety of spiritual and moral content of traditional culture.
