The article explores the history of emergence and development of the network of Orthodox schools in the Baltic region beginning from 1840s as a partof the conversion movement of Estonian and Latvian peasants into Orthodoxy,tracing their history up to 1918. The authors of the article exploreonthebasis of archival and published sources main milestones of the schools’development, the governing bodies, curricula and the impact of the Orthodoxschools in the cultural and social history of the region.
