The article examines one of the most alarming phenomena in the social life of the Russian Empire at the beginning of the 20th century — hooliganism spreading with unprecedented force, which could not but worry the public, including the church. The authors of various church periodicals tried in every possible way to convey to their readers the full danger of this pernicious phenomenon. It was also important to establish the reasons for the manifestation of hooliganism in Russian cities and villages. It seems that the main reason for the spread of such phenomena was the destruction of the centuries-old way of life of the Russian person, the Russian peasant. Not everyone could adapt to the new life in the cities. Therefore, in the language of religious journalism, the weakest in spirit were tempted and committed crimes. Also, the status of “hooliganism” was not legally defined, which created difficulties for both the state and the Church.
