Soviet naturalist writer Georgy Alexeevich Skrebitsky (1903-1964) describes his childhood and youth in the books “From the first thawed patches to the first thunderstorm” and “Wings grow for the chicks”, which are set in the provincial town of Chern, Tula province. Both works frequently mention the churches of Chern, describe the religious sentiments of the local residents, and depict debates between believers and atheists. This article, based on materials from the State Archive of Tula Region as well as some published sources, provides information about certain individuals and churches mentioned by G. A. Skrebitsky in his works.
