The article deals with the problem of person’s self-awareness during the war in Zakhar Prilepin’s novel "Pathologies". The article discusses the problem of person’s sense of self in novel «Patalogies» by Prilepin. The situation of internal conflict is of great significance; it actualizes new and free from the literary tradition aspects of idea and theme. These aspects are: existential perception of terrible experience combined with the process of personal moral deformation, spiritual stagnation, revival of animal instincts in a human associated with both natural desire for self-preservation, and with unnatural thirst for blood. In Prilepin’s novel it is considered as «pathology» of human soul. Metaphysical sense of orphanage in futile war results in estrangement and indifference, inescapable guilt; laugh and fic-tive fearlessness becomes a defensive reaction for these actions. Non-acceptance of violent death and violence appears as the only possible way to moral revival.
