The paper deals with newly discovered graffiti inscriptions in the Cathedral of St. Sophia in Novgorod written on wet clay plaster, allegedly, with ‘nails’. However, lexical and archaeological data suggest that in this case writing with a nail means writing with an animal tooth or a common stylus.
