The number of workers in artisan workshops was one of the most important characteristics of the process of transition from the handicraft industry to manufactory. Master (craftsman) could engage journeymen or laborers. Apprentices and members of master's family (sons first of all) aided him in his work. The author emphasizes the long predominance of handicraft production in the most professions in the 17-18 centuries. The author drew the conclusion about the disparity of the status among the masters who engaged journeymen and those who worked themselves or along with their family. The latter ones were in a more stable position.
