The article considers a possibility of assimilation of culture by a personality through mastering spiritual and moral values. The role of reading in realization of this process is being analyzed. The tendencies influencing the decrease of the role of reading in the life of a modern younger generation such as mass culture, informatisation and dehumanization of public consciousness are shown.
