The prevalence of perinatal and postnatal CMV infection varies in different populations and its role in the pathology of young children is high. According to Russian and foreign authors, primary CMV infection during pregnancy, when a pregnant woman first becomes infected with CMV and seroconversion occurs, is quite rare - in 0.7-4.1% of cases. However, this situation is most dangerous in terms of intrauterine transmission of the infection to the fetus. About 13-14% of seropositive women are susceptible to a secondary infection during pregnancy, which can be either activation of a latent infection (relapse) or reinfection with a new strain of the virus.
