The process of e-sports transition from just an online hobby to the professional competitive online sport is briefly reviewed in the article. The author distinguished the factors which were the main prerequisites for the development of e-sports as a professional sport. It was shown that currently e-sports not only attracts lots of people of all ages around the world, but also plays an important part in the development of university sport.
