The activities of the Nalchik Resort Improvement Society in the early 20th century

The article presents a comprehensive analysis of archival sources regarding the emergence of provincial resort improvement societies in the Terek region, specifically in the Nalchik district during the early 20th century. It delineates a key phase of intensive construction of resort infrastructure. Based on the foundational documents of each society - its charters - the author examines the internal structure of this type of organization. The article explores the characteristics of the formation and activities of the Nalchik Resort Improvement Society. Using this society as a case study, it investigates issues related to the improvement of the area, the organization of the sanitary zone, land surveying, and the rational use of land plots within the settlement. The role of the Caucasian Administration and the Joint Stock Company of the Vladikavkaz Railway in the establishment of the society is highlighted. Furthermore, the article characterizes the factors that hindered the transformation of Nalchik into a resort city, providing insights into the socio-economic and administrative challenges faced during this period.
