The article summarizes the currently available data on decorated bone objects from the archaeological sites in the southern Russian Far East, dating back to the period of Bohai state (698–926). The author proposes a classification system for known examples of bone ornamentation based on decorative morphology, analyzing such compositional types as rhythmic, semantic, and semantic supplemented with rhythm. In each case, the decoration is analyzed in close connection with the function of the artifact on which it adorns and the technique used in its application.
