The study examines the main trends in the development of children and youth sports schools in Kemerovo region in the second half of the 1980s - the mid-2000s. It is proved that in the first decade of this period, there has been a decrease in the number of such schools and their students. The study reveals that the crisis of the 1990s characterized by the funding cuts of children and youth sports schools and transfer to public ownership has negatively affected the sports school activities. In the late 1990s - the mid-2000s, the contradictory trends have emerged. On the one hand, the Federal Education Agency in Kemerovo region paid less attention to the development of children and youth sports schools, military patriotic and sports technical institutions. On the other hand, there was an increased number of sports schools of the Russian Federal Agency for Physical Education, Sports and Tourism, trade unions and other organizations. More children went to such schools as well.
