The girl with a hatbox in the dusk of Tbilisi: on the role of cinematic citation in the poem by Boris Pasternak

The article is devoted to the analysis of the poem “Kak-to v sumerki Tiflisa…” (1936) by Boris Pasternak in the context of his creative work of the 1930-s. Significant for the interpretation of the poem intertextual links to works by A. Blok and by B. Barnet, especially to the “heart” comedy “The Girl with a Hatbox” (1927) by the latter, are revealed. The semantics of the image of the “modiste” (the girl with a hatbox) is outlined as one of the emblematic figures of the mass culture of the 1920-1930-s. The intertext of Pasternak’s poem which has been elicited in the article allows to enhance its comprehension. A creative process, represented in the poem is projected outwards, i.e. objectified in the urban interior. In this way, the “landscape” poem proves to be Pasternak’s manifest of power and independence of art.
