The main thesis of the article is that dialogue differs fundamentally in classical tragedy and comedy for their genre specificity. Material for the study are the texts (Aeschylus’s Agamemnon ; Euripides’s Hippolytus ; Aristophanes’ Peace and Ploutos ; Hamlet, Much ado about nothing and Midsummer night's dream by Shakespeare etc.) corresponding N.D. Tamarchenko conception of classical drama. The classification of dialogue types was realized. Each of them manifests itself differently in tragedy and comedy. The author of the article comes to a conclusion that while dialogue in tragedy is close to “the exchange of monologues”, comedy is truly dialogical for its “interchangeability”.
