Essay genre is popular in ction as well as in other intellectual creative areas. This article analyzes essay as a learning activity at higher school. The genre is reviewed historically and terminologically, its main characteristics and special features of teaching it at higher school are dened. Didactical peculiarities of essay potential for student knowledge control and personality development have been revealed to prove special importance of this topical learning activity.
