Essay genre is popular in ction as well as in other intellectual creative areas. This article analyzes essay as a learning activity at higher school. The genre is reviewed historically and terminologically, its main characteristics and special features of teaching it at higher school are dened. Didactical peculiarities of essay potential for student knowledge control and personality development have been revealed to prove special importance of this topical learning activity.
