The article examines Russian-Japanese relations during the time when Fumio Kishida was Prime Minister of Japan. The paper describes the dynamics of relations between Russia and Japan, and how Kishida influenced the already existing bilateral political narrative. Relations between Russia and Japan underwent changes in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. In many ways, these changes have been beneficial for both countries. The article will show that despite the mutual friendly attitude of the leaders of Russia and Japan, which took place before 2014, the interest in strengthening cooperation between the countries began to gradually fade. The “cooling off” between the Russian Federation and the Japanese state took a new turn as a result of foreign policy changes, when in 2014 many European countries, including the United States, imposed a number of sanc-tions against Russia after the Crimea became part of the Russian Federation. Since then, relations between Japan and the Russian Federation have only become more complicated every year.
