On the basis of a systematic approach and comparative legal analysis of mass media legislation the impact which the principle of reliability of information produces an effect on public and individual consciousness is determined. Direct influence of mass media on public opinion, in the structure of which one can see social evaluation, knowledge, feelings and emotions, attitudes, values, stereotypes, and volitional elements, is stated. It is concluded that the principle of reliability of information has a direct impact on public and individual consciousness, as well as the public opinion; and thus becomes one of the main factors ensuring information security in mass media. The principle of confidence in the legal relationship in information is shown in conjunction of rights and responsibilities, when the right to information corresponds to the obligation of journalists to verify its authenticity.
