The author analyzes the state of the clergy in Cologne in the XIII century as representatives of the Church on the one hand and as an integral and dynamical part of the urban community on the other hand. The source for this study is the work of Caesarius of Heisterbach “Dialogus miraculorum”. The author touches upon the issues of the cura animarum in Cologne, considers different aspects of the clergy routine, their interaction with the inhabitants of the city. The author comes to the conclusion that the opposition between the Church and the City, clergy and laymen turned into adoption and sacralization of the urban space through the clergy activity and expansion of local relic worship, f.e. St. Ursula and 11 thousand virgins of Cologne in case of Cologne.
