The article reviews the main aspects of biography and oeuvre of Jonathan Coe, a contemporary British writer who has become world-famous for his novels “What a Carve-Up”, “The House of Sleep” and ‘The Rotters' Club”. Jonathan Coe receives increased attention of literary critics and journalists abroad who tend to regard him within a tradition of political satire evolved by W. Thackeray, J. Swift and M. Amis, though his biography and views inspire to deeper and broader understanding of his literary works. In Russia Coe's novels remain understudied, so the article attempts to analyze them as literary pieces capturing the ‘spirit of a nation' and helping the reader to comprehend history, culture and intellectual climate in modern Britain.
