This article studies the life and scholarly legacy of the prominent Russian historian Efrem Egorovich Tarmakhanov (1922-2016). Drawing on a wide range of sources - including the scholar’s published works and recollections of his students - the article provides an in-depth analysis of Tarmakhanov’s contribution to the development of historical science. Special attention is given to three main areas of his research: the history of Siberian industrialization, the defense of Leningrad (in which he personally participated), and regional studies of Buryatia. The article explores the formation of his methodological approaches and traces the evolution of his academic perspectives over more than fifty years of scholarly work. Significant focus is also placed on the academic school established by Tarmakhanov, the specific features of training young researchers under his mentorship, and his organizational role at Buryat State University. This article not only reconstructs Tarmakhanov’s intellectual biography but also assesses the relevance of his methodological approaches and concepts to contemporary historiography. The article is of interest both to professional historians and to anyone interested in the development of the humanities in Siberia and the history of the Great Patriotic War.
