The article is devoted to the outstanding figure of the Russian Orthodox Church,Bishop Porfiry (Uspensky; 1804-1885), founder of the Russian Orthodox Churchmission in Jerusalem. The scientist merits of Bishop Porfiry as the largest Russianbyzantologist and orientalist wеre noted by various scientific societies, St. Peters-burg, Moscow and Novorossiysk Universities, three theological academies, whichelected him as a honorary member with doctor degree of divinity honoris causa.Among the numerous works of Bishop Porphyry the special interest is his work itthe field of spiritual enlightenment of the Slavic peoples and, in first of all, his linkwith Bulgarians.
