Fасtors affecting long\term survival after coronary artery bypass surgery

The authors analyzed the results of the study elucidating the factors affecting longterm survival in patients with ischemic heart disease after coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG). Data showed that main factors included the presence of comorbidities, gender, age, presence of left ventricular (LV) aneurysm (LVA), and the clinicalfunctional condition of a patient before surgery. The presence of diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension, LVA, low LV ejection fraction, small diameter of coronary arteries, and the use of venous grafts for CABG adversely affected the prognosis. Female patients had the worst prognosis for survival. Taking into account the fact that surgery itself does not affect the majority of the aforementioned factors as it does not eliminate the main causes of disease, the authors conclude that longterm survival in CABG patients mainly depends on the efficacy of rehabilitation programs and degree of patient involvement.
