The research results of the development of students' ability to transformative activity by sign-symbolic means of art are presented in the article. The objective possibilities of the effective use of specific means of plastic arts in the development of essential characteristics of transformative activity are revealed. Emotional and intellectual characteristics of students' ability to transformative activity by sign-symbolic means of art are clarified. The potential of these means is revealed in the development of creative thinking, emotional and cognitive spheres. The factors of the development of ability in the process of training in architecture in the university are revealed. The problems of propaedeutics are grounded.
