Фармакоэкономика является важной составляющей в оценке медицинских технологий здравоохранения и оценке лекарственных средств для пациентов, занимается сравнительным изучением соотношения между затратами, экономической эффективностью, безопасностью применения ПС, качеством жизни пациента при альтернативных схемах лечения и профилактики заболевания. Это сравнительно молодая дисциплина, ее методы продолжают развиваться. Фармакоэкономический анализ включает такие исследования, как «минимизация затрат», «затраты — эффективность», «затраты — полезность» и «затраты — прибыль», предоставляя необходимую критическую информацию для оптимизации фармакотерапии, оптимального распределения ресурсов здравоохранения и разработки новых лекарственных препаратов.
