Faust by Alfred Schnittke: the "remaining time" of European civilization

The article is devoted to the analysis of the philosophical motives of Alfred Schnittke’s cantata «The History of Dr. Johann Faust». Explication of time models in Schnittke’s musical creativity is carried out. Three main chronological models are identified: polychrony («forest of times»), eschatological time and «remaining time». The main attention in the article is focused on the study of the specifics of the artistic representation of the phenomenon of «remaining time» in the cantata «The History of Dr. Johann Faust». Based on the conceptual developments of J. Agamben, M. M. Bakhtin, O. Spengler and F. Nietzsche, the author reveals the motif of the «remaining time» of European civilization in Schnittke’s cantata. At the end of the study, a comparative analysis of the theme of time in Schnittke’s cantata and in A. Sokurov’s film «Faust» is carried out.
